Subjective Object III (1994)
Microcontroller, speech electronics, oak and brass box;
8x12x8"; 5lbs.
Status: collection of Rene Di Rosa
Programmed in the BASIC language, Subjective Object III has a nine word vocabulary of
digitally recorded natural speech: I, you, we, they, am, are, think, exist, therefore.
When the box is opened, the sculpture selects a subject, verb and predicate and
makes an existentialist statement.
A few of the deeply significant things it has come up with
recently are: "I think, therefore they exist," "You think you exist,
therefore I am" and "They are therefore they are."
This piece was shown as a part of the recent LA County Museum of Art exhibition Ports
of Entry: William S. Burroughs and the Arts, because of its use of the concatenation
of speech fragments, related to Burrough's pioneering cutups. It can now be
viewed at the Di Rosa Preserve north of San Francisco.
The sculpture can rest on a low shelf or pedestal, requires a reasonable amount of
light and 120v power.
